Dr. Ken Blanchard:
A Legend in Leadership
The Man Who Changed How the World Leads
Few people have shaped the way companies lead, manage, and inspire their people more profoundly than Dr. Ken Blanchard. Born on May 6, 1939, in Orange, New Jersey, Ken grew up to become one of the most beloved, widely read, and influential business thinkers of our time. With a gift for turning complex leadership principles into simple, memorable, and actionable wisdom, he has spent decades helping leaders at every level — from the front line to the corner office — become the best versions of themselves.
His philosophy is disarmingly simple: great leadership is about influence, not authority. And that belief has transformed organizations, cultures, and careers around the world.

Education & Academic Roots
Ken's intellectual foundation is as impressive as his impact. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Philosophy from Cornell University in 1961, followed by a Master's degree in Sociology and Counseling from Colgate University in 1963, and a PhD in Education Administration and Leadership from Cornell University in 1967.

He remains deeply connected to Cornell as a Trustee Emeritus and has also served as a visiting professor at the University of San Diego's Master of Science in Executive Leadership Program — continuing to pour his knowledge into the next generation of leaders.

Building a Global Leadership Empire
In 1979, Ken and his wife Margie Blanchard co-founded what would grow into one of the world's premier leadership development organizations — today known simply as Blanchard (formerly The Ken Blanchard Companies), headquartered in San Diego, California. Ken serves as its Chief Spiritual Officer, a title that perfectly captures his belief that great leadership is rooted in values, service, and purpose.

The firm operates across all continents, delivering world-class training and consulting to companies of every size and industry — from small businesses to Fortune 500 corporations.

Ken Blanchard is one of the most prolific and impactful business authors in history, having written or co-authored more than 70 books whose combined sales total well over 28 million copies — translated into 47 languages and read in virtually every corner of the globe.

In 2005, Ken was inducted into Amazon's Hall of Fame as one of the Top 25 Best-Selling Authors of All Time — a staggering achievement that speaks to the enduring relevance of his ideas.

Gung Ho! — A Philosophy That Changes Companies
Of all Ken Blanchard's remarkable books, Gung Ho! holds a special place for companies that have dared to build a truly people-first culture. Co-authored with entrepreneur Sheldon Bowles and published in 1998, Gung Ho! was recognized by Human Resource Executive magazine as one of the Top Ten Training Programs of its era.

The title itself is telling — "Gung Ho" is an expression meaning working together, and that spirit of unified purpose runs through every page.
The book follows the story of a struggling manufacturing plant and its remarkable transformation under two unlikely leaders. Through their journey, Blanchard and Bowles introduce three timeless principles drawn from the natural world:

1. The Spirit of the Squirrel — Work must be worthwhile. People need to understand the deeper purpose behind what they do, just as a squirrel understands the vital importance of gathering for winter. When employees know their work matters, engagement soars.
2. The Way of the Beaver — People thrive when they are in control of achieving their goals. Like beavers working as a team with clear purpose and mutual trust, employees perform at their best when they have defined boundaries within which they have true autonomy.
3. The Gift of the Goose — Cheer each other on. Just as geese honk encouragement to one another in flight, a culture of authentic, enthusiastic recognition fuels intrinsic motivation and creates unstoppable momentum.
These three principles, when truly embedded into an organization's culture, have turned struggling companies into thriving ones — improving morale, productivity, retention, and results all at once.
Ken Blanchard & Mudd Advertising: A Relationship That Shaped Our Culture
We are proud to count Dr. Ken Blanchard as a longtime friend and mentor to our company and its founder, Jim Mudd Sr. Ken has visited Mudd Advertising in Cedar Falls, Iowa multiple times over the years — and in fact, Ken himself wrote about our relationship on his own blog, describing the special bond that grew between our two organizations. That kind of personal investment from one of the world's greatest leadership minds is something we don't take lightly.

Among his many contributions to Mudd Advertising, it is Gung Ho! that has had the most profound and lasting impact on who we are as a company. We incorporated the Gung Ho! principles into the very fabric of our culture from the ground up — embracing worthwhile work, empowering our people, and building a workplace where cheering each other on is not just encouraged, it's a way of life. Ken even celebrated with us when we marked 20 years of living the Gung Ho! culture — a milestone that reflects how deeply those principles took root here.

Ken also played a meaningful role in supporting the development of our two published books:

📖 The Ad Man: "Ask for and Expect Immediate Great Results" — our first book, which captured the Mudd Advertising philosophy of results-driven client service and the culture that has defined our company for decades.
📖 The Ad Man 2.0: "Principles First. Technology Second. Results Now!" — our newest release, which carries that founding philosophy into the modern era, showing how timeless values and cutting-edge strategy work hand in hand.

Having Ken Blanchard's encouragement and guidance behind both books is a testament to the relationship we've built — and a reflection of his lifelong commitment to helping people and organizations share their stories, lead with purpose, and make a lasting difference.
Mudd Advertising is a living example of what Ken Blanchard has always believed: that when you lead people right, treat them well, and give their work true meaning — everyone wins.
"The key to successful leadership is influence, not authority. Feedback is the breakfast of champions" — Dr. Ken Blanchard
